BROWNSBURG — Doug McGuff, M.D., author of Body By Science: A Research-Based Program for Strength Training, Body Building and Complete Fitness in 12 Minutes a Week, visited Brownsburg last Tuesday to promote his book and speak about his exercise program.
McGuff owns the state-of-the-art personal training facility Ultimate-Exercise. He lectures all over the world on exercise science.
“The motivation for me is to try to change the way that the world exercises,” McGuff said. “It doesn’t take a whole lot of effort to go into the airport or Wal-Mart, the mall, or where have you and look around. The conventional wisdom about exercise, what we’re doing, is not working.”
McGuff, an emergency room physician, teamed up with bodybuilding powerhouse John Little to present a scientifically proven formula to maximize muscle development.
“The intensity is where the result producing component of exercise is,” McGuff said. “It’s not in the amount or the volume of exercise.”
In his book, McGuff attempts to demonstrate to his readers that exercise and results do not have to be time consuming.
“My goal is to try to take the light of science, both basic science and research science, and shine it on exercise,” McGuff said. “It doesn’t have to be drudgery. It doesn’t have to take up this much time. As a matter of fact, a high intensity, brief workout that you don’t have to do very often, is actually a requirement for the production of best results.”
Backed by their own research and peer review study, in the book McGuff and Little discuss how muscle is formed and its benefits to overall health. Also in the book, the authors prescribe weekly high-intensity doses of resistance training as the clearest path toward realizing maximum strength potential, achieving fat loss, gaining muscle, and accomplishing total fitness.
Filled with color and black and white illustrations that include detailed anatomical drawings and a color insert that reveals how the plan works on the body’s system, Body By Science provides accurate, honest, and verifiable exercise information.
McGuff was brought to Hendricks County by Bo Railey, a specialist with Exercise Inc. McGuff and Railey created a relationship through the program.
“I’ve known Bo (Railey) for a very long time,” McGuff said. “I’ve run an exercise place very similar to Bo’s for the past 11 years. He came to visit me six years ago to look into running the type of facility that he does now. We’ve been friends ever since that time. He’s come up to Indianapolis with it and been wildly successful, with his three facilities.”
The decision for McGuff to visit was an easy one.
“I’m in the process of trying to promote this book that I have written,” McGuff said. “Bo has seen fit to host me and I am happy to come up here.”
McGuff said he hopes that his audience was encouraged by his speaking and is able to increase their confidence.
“I want them to take away an enhanced and renewed confidence in what they are doing and how it is so good for them,” McGuff said. “I hope that they can pick up some tips in terms of understanding and also tips in terms of dietary manipulations to get even more bang for their buck. The talk is not as much about the how as it is the why. If you have the why, then the how becomes self evident.”
