Two arrested after Avon bank robbery

BY ANDREA HIRSCH

AVON — Two men were arrested for their roles in a weekend bank robbery.

Avon Police Sgt. Jeff Lewis said at about 10 a.m. Saturday, two men — one with a firearm — stole about $1,500 from Lincoln Bank, 7648 E. U.S. 36.

Donald L. Sorrell, 35, Muncie, was charged with robbery, theft, pointing a firearm, intimidation, criminal confinement, and carrying a handgun without a license. He is being held at the Hendricks County Jail in Danville on a $100,000 bond. Kyle T. Cyphers, 22, Redkey, was charged with robbery and is being held at the jail on a $10,000 bond.

Lewis said witnesses saw two suspects flee the bank in an unknown vehicle through a field in the area of the Park Place subdivision. The suspects then got into another vehicle and drove off.

Witnesses were able to provide a description of the second vehicle to the Avon Police Department, which was then dispatched to all police agencies in the area.

A Hendricks County sheriff’s deputy soon initiated a traffic stop on the vehicle and both men were arrested. After search warrants were obtained, detectives found a weapon and the stolen money, and also confiscated several pieces of clothing.

Detectives later determined the first vehicle used in the robbery was stolen from Anderson.

Avon Police Det. Sgt. Sean Stoops said the arrests were a cooperative effort of several veteran officers from the Avon Police Department and the Hendricks County Sheriff’s Department.

Officials at Lincoln Bank declined to comment.
