Lost keys may lead police to burglar

PITTSBORO — Police here found a set of keys that may eventually open a door at the Hendricks County Jail.

A home at 101 W. Main St., Pittsboro, that has been converted into apartment units has twice been burglarized. Police, however, don’t really know what was taken in either burglary.

Pittsboro Police Lt. Scott King said deputies from the Hendricks County Sheriff’s Department were investigating the burglaries, but then passed the case on to the Pittsboro department.

King said the tenants of each of the apartments kept keys to their homes in an electrical box in a common hallway. Police speculate that the alleged burglar found the keys and used them to gain entry into the apartments.

King said he didn’t know what was taken in the first burglary, but nothing appeared to have been taken in the second one.

Instead, the homeowner came home to find a set of keys, apparently left behind by the burglar.

“The keys were found on a dresser in the bedroom of the second apartment,” King said.

King said a couple of the keys are believed to be to locks on tool boxes.

“It’s strange that they would leave the keys,” he said. “I have no idea.”

Anyone who recognizes the set of keys or who has any information on these burglaries is asked to call either King or Pittsboro Police Chief Christi Patterson at 892-3329 or the Hendricks County Communications Center at 837-7873.
