Trailer fire injures three, two children

A Plainfield family was displaced when their home caught fire and became fully involved this week.

The Plainfield Fire Territory was dispatched at 1:27 a.m. March 17 to Maple Grove Trailer Park at 2490 E. Main St., Lot 47, Plainfield. The lot is at the corner of Campbell Street and Maple Lane.

The initial 911 call reported that the trailer was on fire, two children were still inside, and that two adults had escaped.

The first Plainfield fire units arrived within five minutes. Just prior to their arrival the two children were pulled from the burning trailer by the adult male occupant with the assistance of two Plainfield police officers, a Hendricks County Sheriff’s Deputy, and neighbors. Apparently, the adult male occupant had returned to the trailer after his initial escape.

The crew of the first Plainfield fire engine was assigned to patient care and not the fire itself; the next fire companies to arrive attacked what was a heavy fire condition in the trailer. The fire was brought under control within minutes without any damage to any of the neighboring trailers. Washington Township/Avon firefighters assisted the Plainfield firefighters in putting out the blaze.

The two children were transported to Riley Hospital for Children in Indianapolis by Plainfield Fire Territory ambulances. Both children were suffering from smoke inhalation and significant burns. The adult male occupant was transported to Wishard Hospital in Indianapolis by the Washington Township/Avon Fire Department ambulance suffering from burns and smoke inhalation. The fourth occupant, an adult female, escaped without injury.

The cause is still under investigation by the Plainfield Fire Territory Investigation Unit. Although a cause has yet to be determined, the fire is believed to have started in a bedroom in the center of the trailer. At this time, it is believed that the fire was accidental, according to a press release from the Plainfield Fire Territory.

No working smoke detectors were found in the home.
