BHS senior collects items for Jordan’s Place

By Brenda L. Holmes

BROWNSBURG — A close friend has inspired Brownsburg High School senior Chesala Durnal to collect supplies for Jordan’s Place.

Jordan’s Place in Brownsburg is an organization that helps newly fostered families gather supplies for new foster children.

Durnal is a Girl Scout and is pursuing the Gold Award, which requires a service project.

“One of the girls from my church as been in Scouts with me since Daisies,” she said. “She is a foster child and I thought it might make her happy if I did some volunteer work with other foster children. I wanted her to know she is not alone in this.”

In November, Durnal did some volunteer work with Jordan’s Place.

“The kids seemed so happy when I was there,” she said. “And I was so happy to just help them out.”

When it came time to plan her service project, Jordan’s Place seemed like a good fit for her. Earning the Gold Award requires a service project with 65 hours of work.

Durnal will be collecting new socks and new underwear from 11:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. March 21 at the gazebo next to the Brownsburg Police Station.

She said when she volunteered at Jordan’s Place before she had asked what the children most need.

“They just need the basics, so I decided on the socks and underwear,” Durnal said.

But her project will not stop after the drive is over.

“After the drive I will be hosting a party for Jordan’s Place,” she said. “I’ve already received a donation from my church. I was so happy, I was dancing around.”

Durnal attends Church at Main in Brownsburg. She has been a member of Girl Scouts for 13 years.
