Monarch butterflies soar into downtown March 1

A larger-than-life scientific adventure of the marveled monarch butterfly lands in the IMAX Theater in the Indiana State Museum on March 1.

Filmed primarily in Mexico, IMAX officials have partnered with the Mexican Consulate in Indianapolis to showcase Mexico's landscape and raise awareness about the migratory monarch butterfly.

Based on true events, "Flight of the Butterflies 3D" follows the journey of the monarch butterfly in one of the most incredible migrations on Earth. The determined scientist, Dr. Fred Urquhart, who spent 40 years trying to discover the mysteries surrounding their journey and secret winter hideaway, brings the film to life.

Weighing less than a penny, the monarch butterfly migrates annually across a continent - with pinpoint navigational accuracy - to a place it has never been. As the film illustrates, it takes two to three generations of butterflies to migrate north from Mexico through the United States to Canada and one "super generation" to complete the migration back south to Mexico.

"Flight of the Butterflies 3D" will arrive at the Downtown IMAX partially due to a partnership with the Mexican Consulate of Indianapolis to showcase the country's landscape.

"When the monarch butterflies perform their migration, it is further evidence of contact between the U.S. and Mexico," said Consul Juan Manuel Solana, Consul of Mexico in Indianapolis. "The Consulate of Mexico is pleased to have this partnership with IMAX, and above all, offer the public of Indiana the opportunity to enjoy learning about this huge migration experience."

"Flight of the Butterflies 3D" arrives just before the Indianapolis Zoo's launch of "Butterfly Kaleidoscope" on March 22.

"There's no better way to discover this compelling, scientific true story of the monarch butterfly - 40 years in the making - other than on the state's largest movie screen," said Craig Mince, theater manager of the Downtown Indy IMAX. "The brilliance of Mexico and the elegance of the monarch come to life with such magnificent beauty on our six-story screen. You can almost feel their wings flutter against your face."

Tickets are $9.50 for adults, $7.50 for senior citizens, and $6 for children. Parking is always free in the White River State Park parking garage. Patrons should bring in parking tickets for validation by the IMAX box office. To purchase tickets or to get more information, visit the website at www.imaxindy.com.
