CLAYTON — If the citizens of Liberty Township have something on their minds or simply want to learn more about what’s going on around them, they’ll get their chance Sunday.
The township’s fire department is putting on its first ever town hall meeting at 1 p.m. Oct. 7 in the fire station in the community building in Clayton. A chili luncheon is also planned as part of the event.
Liberty Township Fire Department Chief Bobbie Dixon said the meeting is a chance for the community to get together and interact with one another, as well as to learn things like where their tax money is going and give an input on other topics that are of local interest.
“I’m going as the fire chief to present information about our department, what we do, and how we operate,” she said. “We discussed it and we wanted to bring neighbors together to discuss issues and make the town a little bit better.”
Several public officials have been invited to attend, including representatives from the Hendricks County Sheriff’s Department, Hendricks County Commissioners, and County Communications Center. Nancy Johnson of the Hendricks County Council, who represents Liberty Township’s district, will also be there.
“The long-term hope is that we do this two to three times a year, if it’s a success,” Dixon said. “Liberty Township is basically out in the country still and neighbors used to know each other, but we don’t anymore like we used to. This is a way to change that.”
She said the initial response from the community has been positive.
“There’s not a bad issue or anything coming along with it,” he said. “We’re not bringing in people to tell them what’s going to happen. We’re bringing them in to ask them what they’d like to see and see what we can do as a community to move things in the direction we want.”
As for the topics to be discussed, Dixon said “growth” will certainly make the list.
“Growth — that brings a lot of facets,” she said. “We have one warehouse now, they’re getting ready to build one or two more in the near future. The road surface is being redone as well. Growth is the root and it leads to a lot of it.”
Dixon said there has also been discussion about bringing a sewer system to town, so she expects that topic to come up in the meeting.
“I’d love to see 1,000 people there,” she said. “I’d run out of food, but I’d love it.”
