PLAINFIELD — Purple is the signature color of the annual Break a Sweat, Break the Cycle 10K Run/5K Walk set for Sept. 29 at Hummel Park in Plainfield. The event serves as the kickoff to the month of October which is Domestic Violence Awareness Month.
The staff at Sheltering Wings, a local non-profit shelter for domestic violence victims and their children, has been planning activities for the entire month. The first big event is the walk/run.
The focus of the morning is to educate the community about the realities of domestic abuse and the options available to women and children.
Donita Roberts is the development support coordinator for Sheltering Wings and has been helping to organize and promote the event.
“It’s going great so far,” she said. “We have several teams signed up who are walking in memory of someone who has died due to domestic violence.”
She said, as in years past, the course will be lined with signs that offer statistics about domestic violence. There will also be a display of T-shirts hung representing each woman or child that has made Sheltering Wings home over the past year.
“We are also working on finding volunteers to cheer people on during the event,” Roberts said. “We also have several speakers.”
Registration is from 8 to 9 a.m. There will be a program at 9 a.m. and the walk/run will begin at 9:30 a.m.
“It really is a nice event,” Roberts said. “You come out and get your walk in. Then you have the rest of your day.”
Cost to participate is $20 per person or $10 per person in teams of 10 or more. Teams are asked to notify the staff if they are walking or running in honor of, or in memory of, a certain person.

Other upcoming Domestic Violence Awareness Month activities include the annual candlelight vigil Oct. 25 at Sheltering Wings with a time yet to be set, and the annual Battle of the Bands from 6 to 10 p.m. Oct. 29 at The 512 venue at Eagle Church.
