"Space Junk 3D," presented locally by the Indiana Space Grant Consortium, is about to drop out of orbit at the IMAX Theater in the Indiana State Museum. Experience collisions, both natural and man-made, and soar for the depths of Meteor Crater to an unprecedented view of Earth's increasingly crowded orbits - 22,000 miles above.
Starting Sept. 21, join Don Kessler, the "Father of Space Junk," as he guides viewers through the challenges we face in protecting them and forging a new age of space discovery. Through IMAX 3D, moviegoers will be transported high above the earth via Indiana's largest movie screen.
"This is an amazing film and one that is ideally experienced from the vantage point of our spectacular IMAX screen," said Craig Mince, theater manager of the Downtown Indy IMAX. "And thanks to the Indiana Space Grant Consortium, we are able to present this film locally to open our eyes to the fact that what goes up doesn't always come down. It's a film for all ages and a story to be understood by all ages."
In the film, Kessler points out that when two pieces of space debris collide, they produce hundreds of smaller pieces of debris. These can cross paths with other pieces of junk and create more fragments, and so on. Because there's typically nothing to pull orbiting space junk down out of the sky, the cloud of debris only grows.
With 3D visualizations of the swarming clouds of junk, animations of collisions between everything from satellites to galaxies, and footage from Meteor Crater in Arizona, the film gives viewers plenty to lose sleep over. But it's not all doom and gloom. The final minutes reveal real plans astronomers and space engineers have to clear the litter.
