Sheltering Wings will host its second annual “Battle of the Bands” event Aug. 7 at the Hendricks County Fairgrounds in Danville. The mission of the event is to engage and educate teens and adults in the community about teen dating violence while raising awareness.
During active participation in the program, adults and teens will be educated and empowered through the music written and performed by artists between the ages of 13 and 24. Each band has written an entry song about dating violence and sexual assault, with the music styles including heavy metal, rap, pop, and soft rock.
Judges will award prizes to the top three bands.
Student groups will run concessions, giving them the opportunity to raise money for their programs.
K-Love/Air1 will attend the event.
Doors open at 4:30 p.m., with the competition beginning at 5 p.m.
There is no admission fee, but sponsorships are available.

Sheltering Wings provides emergency housing for women and their dependent children suffering from any form of domestic abuse. Since opening its doors in January of 2002, more than 1,000 children and 800 women have called the shelter home. Each is provided immediate needs assessments, support groups, life skills classes, on-site therapy, and connections with community resources. The shelter also provides a teen dating violence program in area middle and high schools, as well as to youth groups and clubs.
