Impact Youth to hold inaugural 5K

AVON — Impact Youth is looking for participants for its inaugural Miles for Mentoring 5K.

The event will start at 10 a.m. Sept. 15 at the Avon Town Hall Park.

Impact Youth Mentoring is a non-profit organization that aims to pair volunteer mentors with youth ages 16 or older. Following training, the mentors spend a few hours a week with the teens they are paired with.

“We chose to do a 5K because we wanted to have an event that could incorporate our mentors,” explained Donald James, CEO and founder of Impact Youth. “Many of our mentors will be on hand at the event with the children they’re working with so people will be able to see the interaction of a mentor/mentee relationship.

“Also, we stress to our mentors that they need to get their children out and engage them in physical activity, and obviously a 5K will be a great form of exercise for all involved.”

There will also be raffle items at the event, and the winner(s) of the 5K race will receive a prize.

The entry fee is $25 per participant, although children ages 12 and younger may participate for free. Strollers are welcome. Everyone registering by Sept. 5 will receive an event T-shirt.

James said Impact Youth continues to grow and additional mentors are always needed.

“We are closing in on 20 mentors and are starting to garner interest from people throughout the country,” he said. “We have close to 15 children on the waiting list, so mentors are definitely still needed. If anyone thinks they would like to help a child for an hour a week and develop a relationship that will impact them for years to come, we want those people to be part of our program.”
