One man’s trash is another’s treasure

Annual garage sale returns to fairgrounds

DANVILLE — Pat Vincent has been helping to run the Hendricks County Flyer Garage Sale and Flea Market for the past 22 years. At the age of 70, she said at each year’s event she still comes across toys and trinkets she remembers from her childhood.

This year’s sale runs from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. March 9 at the Hendricks Power Exposition Hall at the Hendricks County 4-H Fairgrounds and Conference Complex in Danville.

“There’s just something about people who do garage sales,” Vincent said. “They’re looking for treasures, but I also think they’re looking for memories. The people that come are very helpful. A lot of neat people go back and forth, friends that don’t see each other for a year, and everyone seems to have a good time.”

Vincent said the sale has grown over the years, starting off small and “snowballing” to surround buyers and sellers from across Indiana.

“You’d be surprised what people bring to garage sales to sell that somebody else can use,” she said. “Everybody’s always looking for something. And there are so many people that are just nice people. Something about garage salers ... they just seem to be such nice people.

“Usually the people that come, they walk out with a lot of things. I know we’ve changed the time in past years to make it more convenient for people that want to come. But sometimes it’s about just seeing people you don’t see for years. It’s nice to reminisce with them.”

While garage sales are normally held during the warmer months, Cathy Wilson, business manager for the Hendricks County Flyer, said they decided to create a sale on a larger scale for people to attend before the annual rush.

“(Winter months) are very slow months for garage sales,” she said. “Hendricks County just has a ton of people doing garage sales, so we thought ‘why not do one indoors’ to offer something for people to do.”

Wilson said some of the more popular booths seem to be those with baby items.

“Baby clothes don’t get worn that much, so why go pay so much for baby clothes when these are not very used and they don’t get worn that long?” she asked.

Limited booth space is still available and may be reserved by calling the Hendricks County Flyer at 272-5800. For more information, visit the website at www.flyergroup.com.
