PLAINFIELD — Warmer weather is on the horizon and the Hendricks County Parks Department is looking to showcase two of its gems -- Sodalis and McCloud nature parks.
With that in mind, Sodalis hosted a Whitetail Shed Hike last Saturday.
”Today, we are going to instruct people on the Whitetail shed hike,” said Joe Reagin, a naturalist with the parks department. “There are a whole lot of people, who for recreation, will go and find the shed Whitetail (deer) antlers. This is about the time of year that they typically drop off.”
After instructing the attendees on how to locate the antlers, they went on a hike to attempt to find some. To ensure that they do, Reagin hid a few antlers throughout the trail.
With the weather warming, Hendricks County Parks will be hosting several opportunities to be out in the wild like this.
”This time of year, most of the things that we do out here are kind of hike oriented,” Reagin said. “We do have some little project things that we have done here, like building bird feeders and that type of thing ... We are just trying to focus on things that are out in the park right now and featuring things that are seasonal.”
Reagin said they will soon begin featuring birds as the season goes along and the birds start to return. The main idea for the department with these programs is to vilipend the tendency to stay inside.
”The whole goal is to get people out in the park and back in nature, get them out of the house,” Reagin said.
Still in its infancy stage, Sodalis gives the parks department an opportunity to share these programs with residents and visitors in another corner of the county.
“(Having two parks) is an awesome opportunity,” he said. “The neat thing about (Sodalis) is obviously that we have a bigger population base around here. It gives us a lot of visitation, but there are some challenges that go along with that also. There is some room for growth. It’s exciting to have an additional park out here.”
Sodalis Nature Park is near Plainfield; McCloud Nature Park is near North Salem. Both are under the auspices of the county parks department.
