AVON — The World War II Memorial Committee, along with town officials here, will host a charity car show at the Avon Town Hall Park on Aug. 22.
”We’re talking about an event that brings several hundred cars and a number of motorcycles in the same place,” said Paul Morton, a member of the committee. “It’s a great event for Avon to draw the public in from a much wider area.”
The event is free to attend, but donations will be accepted to benefit the memorial project. Though the cars will begin arriving in the morning hours, the actual event will run from noon to 5 p.m.
Along with several in-state contestants, Morton said the show will feature cars from Kentucky, Illinois, Michigan, and Ohio.
The event began when Avon residents Bonnie and Red Bledsoe Ñ who have produced an annual show for the animal shelter -- became aware of the cause.
”When Red became aware of the World War II Memorial, he volunteered to help,” Morton said. “We thought it was a good idea to do a show at the Avon Town Hall Park and it could be a signature event for Avon.”
Morton said he anticipates it becoming an annual event to support the memorial until it is complete, then shifting gears to support the parks foundation.
Several awards will be presented to participants. Morton said Gen. Chet Wright will ride around in a 1939 General Staff Car to give his “General’s Pick.” Other winners will be selected by police chiefs, fire chiefs, and Hendricks County Sheriff Dave Galloway, among others.
Parking will be available at the Avon-Washington Township Library, the park’s north lot, and Avon Intermediate School West. Shuttles will be running to take people to the park.
Morton said the Avon Town Hall Park is the perfect setting for such a show.
”(The park) allows us room to grow,” he said. “There is plenty of space there that will allow us to grow as large as the community wants. We think this will be important to the future of the event.”
The show will also have a T-28 flyover, games, and concessions.
