Underwear drive underway

A drive to collect new (packaged or tagged) underwear will begin Feb. 1 and continue through March 25.

Titled "Underneath It All, We're All the Same," this annual collection benefits needy Hendricks County families by providing new undergarments. Such items are seldom donated during most clothing drives. New undergarments including bras, underpants, and briefs are accepted. Monetary donations for the purchase of underwear may also be made.

Because undergarments are not readily apparent, purchase of underwear is sometimes one of the first things to be eliminated by a struggling family trying to make ends meet. This "invisible sign of poverty" is not only a concern of comfort but also of personal hygiene. Last year 14 Hendricks County church congregations donated more than 450 packages of underwear, as well as $1,852, to purchase additional items. The undergarments were distributed to children in need through food pantries, Sheltering Wings, and clothes pantries. The drive hopes to help even more people this year.

A box for new underwear donations has been set up at the Hendricks County 4-H Fairgrounds and Conference Complex, and many area churches are also participating.
