PITTSBORO — A Leadership Hendricks County alum is giving back to the program by presenting a wine tasting fundraiser this Friday.
"I'm just trying to help them raise some money," said Rick Myers, a 2010 LHC graduate.
The event is from 6:30 to 9 p.m. at 1298 E. U.S. 136, Suite G, Pittsboro. That's the headquarters for Team Moore Racing, an Indy Lights team that Myers has gotten to know over the last year.
"They've been gracious enough to host the event," he said.
Tickets are $15 each. A final wine list is still being determined.
"There will be a decent selection, but there won't be a bunch of wineries there," Myers said. "It's going to be a really simple event."
Myers also raises funds for LHC through a women's business luncheon that he spearheads. Susan Rozzi, the organization's executive director, loves to see graduates make such an effort.
"We have such strong alumni involvement in every area of the program," she said. "This is just one of them."
Fundraisers like this wine tasting are important for a couple of reasons.
"It helps others learn about Leadership Hendricks County," Rozzi said. "And because our commitment at Leadership is to keep our program fees at a level that allows anyone to be able to participate, we need the support of our alumni as well as those in the community that see the importance of Leadership. They may not be able to dedicate the time to go through the program, but they see how important it is."
Indeed, the current LHC class is No. 21. Rozzi and many others have watched the fingerprints the program has put on Hendricks County form over the past couple of decades.
LHC conducted an alumni survey early last year. About 25 percent responded. Of those, 150 are involved in community organizations.
"That's pretty incredible," Rozzi said. "And that's just the people that responded. Over the next year, we're committed to trying to get a better handle on how many Leadership grads are involved in what programs."
The emphasis of LHC is all in its name - teach leadership skills and all about Hendricks County. The goal is for its graduates to take that knowledge and better serve their community.
"They've really taken that to heart," Rozzi said.
