Brownsburg police chief receives honor

BROWNSBURG — At a recent Brownsburg Town Council meeting, Police Commission President, Stan Comer, and the other members of the Brownsburg Police Commission, presented Chief Michael Dove with a Meritorious Service Medal.  This prestigious award has only been presented to one other recipient in Brownsburg Police Department history. That recipient was former and late Chief of Police Frank McCoskey.

President Comer, Vice President Allan Bolante and Commissioners Ray Kotarski, Dwayne Sawyer and Tom Garrison, advised the Council that they considered Chief Dove's history with the Town of Brownsburg and his service to the Brownsburg Police Department when making the decision to present this type of award to Chief Dove. President Comer then cited many of Chief Dove's accomplishments in his career to the Brownsburg Town Council.

President Comer noted Chief Dove's service for our country with the United States Navy prior to joining the Brownsburg Police Department as a Reserve Officer in 1990.  Comer went through the list of the many positions that Chief Dove has held within the department, such as Field Training Officer, Department Instructor, Certified Crime Scene Investigator, Shift Supervisor, Uniform Division Commander, a member of the United Drug Task Force and  Hendricks County SWAT Team, Emergency Response Team Commander, Detective and prior to his appointment to Chief, our Assistant Police Chief.

President Comer cited that due to Chief Dove's restructuring of the department, the department received the first ever "Excellence Award" presented by the Commission on Accreditation for Law Enforcement Agencies.  During Chief Dove's career, he has received over thirty letters of commendations, obtained over 4,000 hours of specialized training, graduated from the F.B.I. National Academy, was a recipient of the Medal of Valor, a recipient of the Excellence in Investigation Award, two Top Gun Awards and named Officer of the Year for both the Town of Brownsburg and Hendricks County.

President Comer stated, "It should be quite evident that our Police Department is in extremely qualified, caring and competent hands with Chief Dove in command.  I believe one of the Chief's strongest attributes is his willingness to acknowledge and give credit where credit is due.  If you attend our Police Commission meetings you will hear the Chief routinely give accolades and recognition to members of the department, both sworn and civilian.  He understands the principles of leadership and the importance of recognition within the Police Department".
