A cast of performers who are consumers of mental health services are staging a play designed to help disarm the stigma of mental illness.
"Nobody Needs to Know," a one-act play, will be performed at 7:30 p.m. Jan. 21 at the Depot Theater, home locally to the Merry MAC Players, 210 N. Marion St., Martinsville. Admission is free.
"Everyone in the cast uses or has used mental health services," said Susan Kent, project manager of Awareness of Mental Health through the Performing Arts (AMHPA), the organizer of the production. "We're not ashamed to admit it. In fact, we are proud to be bringing the play to Martinsville and proud to be bringing light to the subject of mental illness."
"Nobody Needs to Know" is set in a support group meeting. Through a series of mini-dramas, the cast addresses several aspects of life with mental illness and portrays the ways in which individuals are affected by and deal with the stigma of being mentally ill.
The play will be presented in a "readers theater" format with the performers reading from scripts in a setting with minimal staging and props. The play lasts approximately 40 minutes and will be followed by a discussion in which audience members are encouraged to ask questions of the cast and organizers.
The play is suitable for families.
AMHPA will perform the play more than two dozen times throughout central Indiana over the course of a year. Organizations interested in hosting a performance may email amhpa@sbcglobal.net.
The play was written by Carol Bozena, a licensed clinical social worker. It is funded by the Indiana Family and Social Services Administration Division of Mental Health and Addiction. More information is available online at www.amhpa.org.
