Avon welcomes Cheddar’s restaurant

AVON — Though Cheddar’s is not necessarily a new concept for central Indiana, it has been missing for a bit.

That changed earlier this week when the restaurant chain opened an Avon location off of U.S. 36, in front of the Walmart store.

”We are all excited,” said Gary Nelson, franchise district manager. “With the Indianapolis market, there was a Cheddar’s here before, several years ago. We have a lot of buzz still from that building that was here. There a lot of guests coming in, excited for us to be back, and we are glad to be back.”

He said they’re pleased to be in Avon and look forward to fitting in with the community.

Steve Pottinger, vice president of operations for the Mint Julep restaurants group that handles Cheddar’s, added, “There is a lot of energy in Avon. We’re very excited about the staff here, as well.”

Nelson said the growing chain is a perfect fit with the growing community.

”We’re a growing concept, so any market, like Avon, that is growing and vibrant, we want to be a part of,” he said.

Nelson said the retail options in Avon can only help his business. He said that all they need to do is “get this guests in here and treat them like we know that we can.”

Cheddar’s began with an idea from Aubrey Good and Doug Rogers. That idea came to fruition in 1979, when the first restaurant opened in Arlington, Texas.

”(The founders) were great visionaries, who had the idea of building this nice, big, beautiful restaurant and giving the guests a great value,” Pottinger said. “Here’s the key, making scratch food in the kitchen.”
