Clermont to host 61st rodeo

CLERMONT — With so much tradition around the annual Clermont Rodeo, excitement isat an all-time high. This year’s event is Sept. 16-17 at the Lions Club Park.

”They have been telling me that it’s the oldest rodeo in Indiana and the second oldest rodeo this side of the Mississippi,” said Alex Sipe, first-year stock contractor of the event. “I actually grew up in Brownsburg. It’s an honor to put on the 61st Clermont Rodeo, because it’s such a tradition, but it’s also an honor because I’m kind of a hometown cowboy. To be able to put on the hometown rodeo, and have it be that big of a rodeo, I’m happy about it.”

There are several other events scheduled around the rodeo.

”Friday night before the rodeo, there’s a fish fry and some Bluegrass,” Sipe said. “The rodeo starts at 7:30. There’s going to be concessions. Then it’s going to be a full, seven-event rodeo and there’s going to be breakaway roping, so an eight-event rodeo. We’re going to have all of the rodeo clowns and all of that stuff.”

There will also be a mechanical bull and bounce houses available that Saturday night.

”It’s the ideal situation for the local families because it’s something different,” Sipe said. “It’s not something that they get to see on TV all of the time or getto experience in real life. It’s a good thing to take the family to. There’s plenty of seating and there’s all of the concessions. The show lasts a couple of hours, so it won’t be toolate. It’s a pretty good deal.”

Sipe also said that there will be an after party following the performance Saturday night at the Eight Second Saloon.

In past years, the rodeo acted as a “Tough Enough to Wear Pink” rodeo --raising money for breast cancer. Sipe said that’s something they will look to bring back next year. They’re also looking at expanding the event for next year to make it even more of a community event.

Tickets for the rodeo are $12 at the gate or $10 presale at Crossroads Feed Barn in Brownsburg.
