LIZTON — During the 2012 season, the Indianapolis Colts have committed to “honoring everyday heroes” with what is called the Anthem Angel Award. For their first home game, the recipient will be lifelong Hendricks County resident Lisa Crouch.
Crouch works part time for Hendricks County Emergency Management and has been a volunteer firefighter for more than 20 years.
The program, a partnership with Anthem Blue Cross and Blue Shield, awards community members who have been first respondents in outstanding service to others through their civil or public service profession.
Crouch will be honored at 11 a.m. this Sunday, before the game, as well as receiving VIP club seat tickets and a feature story in the Colts pre-game magazine.
Crouch says what she does is nothing special — just what she feels she should be doing.
“I was floored when I found out,” she said. “I had no idea this had been submitted, and it was very humbling. I’ve been a volunteer firefighter since 1988 and I try to volunteer for all kinds of things in school, like softball, Halloween costumes, and things of that nature, but those are the things parents do.”
Crouch said the best part of winning the award will be the chance to take her 78-year-old mother to her first NFL football game.
“That’s the fun part,” she said. “She’s never been to the new stadium or an NFL game. She’s so excited she went out and bought a new Colts shirt yesterday.”
Crouch’s husband, Robert, was one of multiple people who nominated her, unbeknownst to Lisa.
He said, “I was very thrilled. She puts in a lot of time and a lot of effort at what is a part-time position for the county and then does all of this volunteer work. I’m just really proud of the fact that she’s finally being recognized for all the work that she’s done.”
