Brownsburg Community School's website supposedly hacked by Muslim group

Both All Muslims of the World or IRAQI-TOP groups mentioned on webpage

BROWNSBURG — Law enforcement and the Brownsburg Community School Corporation are actively investigating a Wednesday night website hacking from a group calling themselves All Muslims of the World.

The group posted Arabic writing on the school’s home page that read, “I sacrificed my mother, father, and myself for Allah. This breakthrough in response to the film and graphics depicting the master of the world may Allah bless him and grant him peace.”

On Tuesday, protesters attacked the American Consulate in Libya, killing four Americans, in response to the anti-Islam movie referenced in the message on the BCSC site. The film is believed to have originated in California.

Another message on the BCSC website read in red letters, “Coming, soon you will hear voices of our swords.”

Along with the red letter message on the hacked page was an image of a girl with the Iraqi flag coloring her face and a message below in English reading, “hacked by IRAQI-TOP.”

It was not readily distinguishable as to who actually performed the hack, All Muslims of the World, IRAQI-TOP, or simply a prankster.

BCSC communications coordinator Donna Petraits said the message was online for about 30 minutes before school officials were notified and shut the site down.

Wednesday night, school administrators issued the following statement:

“Brownsburg Community School Corporation believes its website was hacked earlier this evening. District personnel and police are aggressively investigating how this happened and who is responsible. The site in its hacked state appears to have only been visible for approximately half an hour before staff was alerted and the site taken down. BCSC apologizes for any offensive language or information on the site and for the inconvenience of its unavailability.

“The website will be up as soon as we are assured it is safe. More information will be available as the investigation continues.”

State and federal agencies are working with the school corporation to determine the source of the hacking incident. On Thursday, the BCSC issued an updated statement that read:

“What we currently know is that the website was hacked from an outside source and it appears to be a random breach from a party looking for a vulnerable website.

“We have been told that this is not a unique incident and has happened previously on other random and vulnerable sites. Authorities have assured us that there is no direct or indirect threat to Brownsburg Schools, students, or staff. All Brownsburg schools are operating as per usual today.”

Petraits said the website will remain off-line until it has been secured to prevent such an incident from occurring again.

Parents of BCSC students were notified of the incident via phone and e-mail.

Until the website is restored, parents are encouraged to utilize the BCSC Facebook page for updates.
