Library offers ‘An Evening With John Green’

PLAINFIELD — Teens and young adults are buzzing about John Green’s visit to the Plainfield-Guilford Township Public Library at 7 p.m. April 14.

The library’s teen coordinator, Courtney Allison, said she’s excited to welcome one of her favorite authors to Plainfield.

“He is really fun,” Allison said. “His books are great and he does a vlog with his brother that is so funny and very interesting.”

Green is a New York Times best-selling author of teen books who lives here in central Indiana. He has written three books: An Abundance of Katherines, Paper Towns, andLooking For Alaska and co-wrote his latest book, Will Grayson, Will Grayson, with author David Levithan.

He is also a part of “Vlogbrothers” which is an online video blog done by Green and his brother, Hank. It has taken off and their Youtube videos have been viewed more than 75 million times.

The videos spawned a community of people called Nerdfighters who have raised hundreds of thousands of dollars to fight poverty; they also planted thousands of trees around the world in May of 2010 to celebrate Hank’s 30th birthday.

In addition, Green’s Twitter account has more than 1.1 million subscribers.

Allison said her absolute favorite John Green book is Looking for Alaska.

“It’s just really well written and realistic,” she said. “I also like Paper Towns — it’s a great one as well.”

Green’s visit is part of the library’s celebration of National Library Week. Seating is first come, first served.

“We will have the upstairs meeting room all set up and if we have overflow we have other rooms we can use,” Allison said. “He will also be signing books after he speaks.”

Barnes and Noble will be bringing a selection of Green’s books to sell for those who would like to purchase copies to be signed.

Green will also be having dinner with the Teen Library Advisory Board (TLAB) before his talk.

If you were out and about during the holiday season you probably saw a few people cheerfully gazing into the glow of their smart phones or tablets. They were busy and on the go, checking work e-mail, texting friends, listening to music, or searching for the closest Thai restaurant.

Several years ago, I did not attend a family reunion because of a scheduling conflict. The aunt who had kept “the family statistics” decided she was ready to hand the job over to someone else. My mother volunteered me and I learned to never miss a family reunion.
