Plainfield library gets a facelift

PLAINFIELD —

The staff of the Plainfield-Guilford Township Public Library rolled up their sleeves to create a new look for patrons. The facility needed new carpeting and the staff took advantage of a week-long closing to make some other changes to enhance the library.

“We had to have new carpet,” Library Director Edra Waterman said. “We decided to take the opportunity to move some things and reconfigure the library’s resources.”

She said as the library evolves over time, it must keep up with the needs of the community.

“We keep the library changing to fit the needs of the people who use it,” Waterman said. “One of the areas that has changed is Area T.”

Area T is the teen portion of the library. It has been expanded to three times the size it was and it was moved into an enclosed area that had been used for staff space.

“It really is pretty cool and I think the kids are going to like it,” she said. “A lot of teens use the library every day. And having it in an enclosed space will help with the noise.”

The library also secured different shelving units that can move and are not as tall.

“This whole area will be open,” Waterman said. “When you walk in the door you will be able to see all the way back to the windows.”

She said the new furniture also makes the library more flexible in that they can move the units as needed.

The library has been closed since Sept. 12 and it will re-open on Sept. 19.

“We will not have everything done when we re-open,” Waterman said. “We will be able to check things in and out, but there will be no access to public computers for at least another week.”

The remodeling project was paid for by funds put aside by the library over the past 10 years, she said.

“This has been a pretty big project,” Waterman said. “We’re just thrilled with it and we’ll still have plenty of money in our reserves.”

The staff will be hosting a grand re-opening celebration from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Sept. 24. There will be a ribbon cutting ceremony at 11 a.m. and free library book bags will be given way. There will also be exhibits, a craft project for children, a teen podcast, special tours, and hourly door prizes including a Barnes and Noble Nook e-reader.

The Plainfield-Guilford Township Public Library is at 1120 Stafford Road, Plainfield. For more information, call the library at 838-3800 or visit the website at www.plainfieldlibrary.net.
