  • Judge's ruling promotes young teens into women

When are females younger than 17 considered girls? When they want an aspirin from the school nurse. In that case, the nurse needs permission from their parents. After all, legally they are juveniles - still children.

But when those same females want to buy a "morning-after" birth-control pill, they are considered "women" - adults who should have the right to make their own decisions about their bodies, free of any parental interference.

That is the Through-the-Looking-Glass world we now officially inhabit.

  • Can't we all just get along?

I look around and I see a country divided, two sides facing off in bitter opposition, neither showing the slightest inclination to compromise or indicating any interest in closing the rift between them.

I wonder: Is there any way, any way at all, to bridge the gap between Mayonnaise People and Miracle Whip People?

  • The new climate deniers

There are few things sadder than the "climate denier." He ignores the data and neglects the latest science. His rhetoric and policy proposals are dangerously disconnected from reality. He can't recalibrate to take account of the latest evidence because, well, he's a denier.

  • It's a sticky situation

Do you ever get a craving for sweets? Let's say you are at an early morning meeting and some horrid sadist brings in a box of donuts. Do you partake? Maybe just a nibble?

  • The great gun control fizzle

Rarely has the political class whipped itself into a lather that has abated so quickly. After the Newtown, Conn., massacre, so many invested so much hope in President Barack Obama's pledge to "use whatever power this office holds" to pass new gun control laws.

  • Clowning around with Chocola and Mourdock

Chris Chocola is not a clown.

He doesn't wear a bulbous red nose or a bright orange Bozo wig. His shoes aren't two feet long. He doesn't drive a little yellow taxi filled with other clowns, who tumble out at the first sounding of a Chinese fire drill.

  • All basketball, all the time

We said good-bye to Mom the other day.

Oh, no. Not that. She's still alive and kicking. Watch your shins.

  • Gay marriage by fiat?

It is a sign of how far supporters of gay marriage have advanced that the term "opposite-sex marriage" - an infelicitous phrase that once would have been a confounding tautology - is now in common usage.

  • 'The Bible': Hollywood's come to Jesus moment?

Imagine the pitch to a History Channel executive for the smash hit "The Bible."

  • High school honors are losing importance

I'm going to ignore the U.S. Supreme Court figuring out how to explain that the right to gay marriage has been enshrined in the Fourteenth Amendment since 1868 and they just hadn't noticed it until now; and focus on a less momentous, but equally interesting result of political correctness - the demise of the academic honor roll.
