Jim Rees is celebrating his 90th birthday from 2-4 p.m. March 28 at the Mooresville Senior Center, his home away from home, at 4305 E. S.R. 144.
All are welcome, and may enjoy refreshments and a chance to hear the Hendricks County Choral Club entertain at 2:30 p.m. Rees requests that gifts be omitted, but donations to the Mooresville Senior Center, P.O. Box 343, Mooresville, IN, 46158, where Rees is a past board member, will be accepted.
He was born James D. Rees Jr. in Maysville, Ky., to James D. Rees Sr. and Mary Inlow (Pyles) Rees. He was the youngest of three siblings, with the other two being Margaret (Rees) Taylor and Lillian (Rees) Bockoski. The family lived in Canada before settling in Indiana. He graduated from Tech High School and attended the University of Kentucky.
Mr. Rees served in the U.S. Navy for four years and was on the USS Bogue from 1942-44. Crossing the Atlantic 14 times, his convoy never lost a ship. The Germans, however, had 34 submarines sunk by the Bogue, which earned the unit a presidential citation from President Roosevelt.
Mr. Rees married Peggy (Brunson) Rees on Oct. 31, 1943. After the war, he returned with his wife to the family business, Willowbrook Golf Course, until 1966, and Friendswood Golf Course until his retirement.
His family includes Esther Ellis of Vancouver, Va., Dan Rees of Jacksonville, Fla., Sara Rees of Camby, and Ginger Brophy of Plainfield. He also has seven grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren.
In his life, Mr. Rees restored five Model T Fords, was a Boy Scout master for Troop 444, a ham radio operator (K9YKH) and taught ham radio at the Indiana School for the Blind. One of his most rewarding memories is a student who could not speak correctly, but with the help of a speech therapist and the help of Mr. Rees, the student was able to learn to speak over the amateur radio. After graduation, the student started an amateur radio station in Anderson.
Mr. Rees is a charter member of the Eagle Creek Sailing Club and helped build many of the docks. He also enjoys going to auctions and antique malls with his second wife, Alice Rose (York) Rees, who he married April 6, 1990.
