PLAINFIELD — Mary East and Myrna Hernandez have fallen in love with Zumba — and they want to share it with the community at their new fitness center, Studio Z.
The duo met and became good friends while working at the Plainfield Recreation and Aquatic Center in Plainfield.
“Zumba has taken off so we decided to open our own studio,” East said.
Zumba is a fitness class in action. It features exotic rhythms set to high-energy Latin and international beats.
“I was a personal trainer at the aquatic center,” East said. “Myrna took my Zumba class and loved it. We were hooked.”
They both now teach Zumba as well as other fitness classes.
The focus at Studio Z is to offer classes to the community in a fun environment. They do not have memberships but rather offer a “pay as you go” punch card.
“We think you should be able to afford to work out,” she said. “And we are always running specials.”
During the month of February, Studio Z offered a special where those who worked out could bring a special “someone” for free to celebrate Valentine’s Day.
“We have club lighting in the studio so at night it looks like a club in here,” East said. “People will stop by just to look inside.”
She said Zumba is for people of all ages and fitness levels. Studio Z offers Zumba, EZ Zumba, Zumba Toning, pilates, yoga, and piyo.
They also offer Tall Ones and Small Ones Yoga, a class for moms, dads, grandparents, or older siblings to bring in children age 3 and older. The class includes a yoga routine which incorporates children’s literature, music, singing, games, or rhymes.
Yoga helps children and adults to calm the mind and stretch the body. It also increases the ability to concentrate and focus while dealing with stress.
For this class the “small ones” are free and the “tall ones” use the punch card system.
When the studio first opened this past summer, they held a class outside in the parking lot.
“We had a big stage,” East said. “It was a lot of fun but man was it hot.”
East is a Plainfield native growing up here and graduating from Plainfield High School in 1980.
“My kids went to school here,” she said. “My oldest is teaching Spanish at the high school.”
She has taught Zumba at several venues and often travels to instruct.
Studio Z will host a Zumba Master Class with guest instructor Cesar Acosta from 6 to 7:30 p.m. Feb. 25. Cost of this special class is $20 per person in advance and $25 at the door.
“This is Zumba amped up,” East said. “It will be an all-out cardio class. It will be over the top.”
She will teach the class with Acosta.
“Cesar is very well known in Indianapolis,” East said. “This will be my first master class. I’m very excited.”
Studio Z keeps an updated list of classes and times on its website at www.studiozplainfield.com.
