Ann D. Murtlow, who previously served nine years as chief executive officer of Indianapolis Power & Light Company (IPL), has been hired by United Way of Central Indiana (UWCI) to assume the non-profit’s leadership. Murtlow begins her new role April 1, succeeding Ellen K. Annala, who is retiring March 31 after 23 years of service and 15 as president.
Murtlow’s hiring was ratified by United Way’s board of directors following the recommendation of a board-comprised selection committee that began its search last fall. Former board chair David Resnick (Katz, Sapper & Miller LLP) chaired the committee.
Murtlow became IPL’s president and CEO following IPL’s acquisition by Virginia-based AES Corporation in 2002. The move made her one of a few female chief executives in the electric utility industry. Since leaving IPL, she has operated an independent consulting firm offering strategy, operations, management, and leadership advisory services to businesses and non-profits.
Murtlow has extensive corporate and non-profit board experience. She co-chaired the Central Indiana Corporate Partnership, was vice chair of the Indianapolis Zoo and chair of the Women’s Fund of Central Indiana. She was also director of the Federal Reserve Bank of Chicago for six years and now serves on the boards of Economic Club of Indiana, Indianapolis Zoo Founders Board, and The Mind Trust. She is also a director of First Internet Bank, Great Plains Energy, Herff Jones, and Wabash National Corporation.
She and her husband, Jim, have a daughter, Ally, 22, and a son, Tyler, 18.
