PLAINFIELD —
Lorie Mischler has created a working business plan out of her personal passion to help people. As the owner/operator of Biofit in Plainfield, she is able to help the community one person at a time.
“All we do here is by appointment,” Mischler said. “Our clients are usually scheduled one to three times a week. Everything we do is individualized.”
Mischler is a certified strength and conditioning specialist, certified personal trainer. She also has a bachelor of science degree in exercise science from Indiana University.
“When we start, we sit down with a new client and find out what their individual goals are and develop a program from there,” she explained.
Mischler has one employee, Iesha Haskins, and has had a personal training and Kensis studio for two years at 160 Plainfield Village Drive, Suite 185, Plainfield.
“This is a great location,” she said. “We can do anything here from fitness and wellness to post rehabilitation work.”
She said she met Haskins when they were both working part time at Cardinal Fitness. Haskins graduated from Speedway High School in 2006 and finished her education at Northwest Missouri State University where she studied corporate wellness, recreation, and psychology.
Mischler has always been a Plainfield resident.
“I’ve spent my whole life here,” she said. “My dad is a Plainfield graduate and my mom an Avon graduate.”
She graduated from Plainfield High School in 1983.
“I was an aircraft maintenance supervisor at ATA,” Mischler said. “My husband died in a stress death. He committed suicide. I was able to function because I was working out and taking care of myself. Soon thereafter, I let myself go and my body fell apart.”
That’s when she decided she needed a change in career, so she went back to school at IUPUI and studied exercise science.
“Exercise can help relieve stress and anxiety,” she said. “And since I’ve been doing this, I’ve helped to save one person not take their own life.”
She said her love of people has pushed her to learn about rehabilitation exercise for people who have had surgeries.
“I’ve been lucky and have had several referrals from several doctors, chiropractors, and therapists,” Mischler said. “The main thing that we do is individualize the workout. Nobody has a perfect body. And we can help by doing an assessment.”
Her clients range in abilities from post surgical rehab patients to professional athletes.
“We are not a typical gym,” she said. “We control the number of people in here at any time. When they come in, they know what they’re supposed to do and most of them do it on their own. But they know we’re right here by their side if they need us.”
Mischler and Haskins said their equipment is one of the best selling points of the Biofit program. They use Technogym equipment and a Kinesis Wall.
“This equipment is safe for everyone,” Haskins said. “The Kinesis Wall helps with balance, flexibility, stringent, and cardiovascular. It helps with free motion. The wall has 2,500 plus movements. We teach the basics and help them adapt (the exercises).”
Biofit will also be offering group Kinesis classes beginning this month.
Haskins said one of her closest friends was very skeptical about the Kensis Wall until she came in and tried it out first hand.
“I tried to explain it to her but then just told her to come in and try it,” she said. “She was like a kid on a playground. She loved it. She said I was trying to trick her. Trick her into exercise.
“We do not use heavy weights. We teach them how to use their own body weight.”
Plainfieldresident Lanny Rue has been a client of Mischler’s for more than five years. She’s helped him rehabilitate after several surgeries.
“I now have two prothesis and Lorie has been with me through the whole process,” Rue said. “I had had a total knee replacement that fell apart.”
He has a prosthetic foot on one leg and a prosthetic knee and foot on the other leg.
“I owe a lot to Lorie,” he said. “She’s helped me each time to come up with a program for me to follow.”
He said every time he gets his workout down and is no longer “sweating,” Mischler kicks it up a notch.
“You really get out what you put into it,” Rue said.
