PLAINFIELD —
The Indiana State Police (ISP) released a report Tuesday that confirmed weather conditions and driver error caused the massive pileup on Interstate 70 on Jan. 31.
The pileup left one person dead and involved 24 vehicles (11 semi-trucks, one box truck, and 12 passenger vehicles).
According to the report, “a sudden snow fall occurred, creating a white-out condition and bringing visibility to nearly zero.”
The conditions forced drivers to “brake suddenly,” which proved to be problematic for the semi-trucks.
Investigators were unable to determine which vehicle was slow to slow or stop, but concluded that almost all of the drivers were going too fast to adjust to the white-out conditions, while some were following other vehicles too closely, according to the report.
