Bulldogs clinch HCC championship

BROWNSBURG — In a game the Brownsburg players and fans will remember for a very long time, the Bulldogs seized the outright Hoosier Crossroads Conference title and started 8-0 for the first time since 1994. And they did so in some of the most adverse weather conditions for a football game as rain fell heavily throughout the entirety, making it difficult to accomplish anything field.

But Brownsburg (8-0) made the most of a powerful rushing attack to take control early on and seal a 14-0 victory over visiting Zionsville (6-2).

“This hasn’t sunk in yet,” Brownsburg coach Brett Comer said. “I am very proud of our kids, the way they played tonight and the way they’ve played all season by taking it game by game.”

The conditions affected every facet of the game, none more than the two signal callers.

Brownsburg quarterback Ian Good handled the ball on every snap and did not turn the ball over once, alertly picking up a couple of loose balls on the ground before Zionsville defenders could settle on top of them.

“It was nasty,” Good said smiling with spots of mud on his face. “I was worried about getting the snap every time. Ball security was what we were focused on the entire game.”

Brownsburg scored on its second drive of the game after both teams had punted to open the contest. A second Zionsville punt from deep in its own territory gave Brownsburg excellent field position on the Eagles’ 35.

Six plays later, Chase Dutra started left and reversed his direction, scoring on a 14-yard run for a 7-0 lead.

In the second quarter, Brownsburg put together an 11-play, 63-yard drive, fueled by a 38-yard run by Toks Akinribade that culminated with Good scoring on a sneak for a 14-0 lead.

Brownsburg’s defense also deserved a ton of credit as they held Zionsville to 99 yards of offense on the evening.

Jeremy Shupperd helped spearhead a tremendous defensive effort that saw the Bulldogs pack the box with eight and nine defenders. The magnitude of the accomplishments was not lost on the senior defensive back.

“I am just grateful and as a team this all means a heck of a lot,” Shupperd said. “We are sitting  alone at the mountaintop right before heading into the tournament and it is great.”

Brownsburg heads to Fishers next Friday to try and put a great capper on what has already become a memorable season.

“I don’t think we will have any problem getting our kids focused,” Comer said. “We talked about being one of the best teams in the history of our school. We have a chance to be undefeated, we are going to their place for senior night and I’m sure they will be emotionally charged up and they are a great team. It will be a good game, a great test and a good way to get ready for the tournament.”
