AMO — The lobby at Mill Creek West Elementary School has a whole new look, thanks to a $1,000 grant from Hendricks County Youth As Resources, a bequest from a former employee, and the talents of a few creative children.
When former Mill Creek West Elementary School Custodian Jack Eggers passed away in the winter of 2004, he bequeathed $80,000 to the school.
“Obviously, we were shocked when we got that money,” said Principal Jeremy Baugh. “The community had already come together and built the new playground in his honor, so we had his money to make improvements and changes to our school.”
Students wanted to use the new lobby in their school as a space for the community to gather and a spot for children and teachers to take some time away from the classroom.
“They got together and received a grant from the Hendricks County Youth As Resources Foundation, and we planted some trees and bought some park benches,” Baugh said. “We had a local artist paint these murals all around the lobby to give it an outdoor feel.”
Baugh said the Mill Creek community is growing and school officials have planned appropriately. Among other projects, the school’s library was recently renovated and a science lab was added.
“One challenge when you come to the school library is what to focus on,” he said. “We were already making changes to the rest of the school, and needed to decide whether to focus on more books or more technology.”
Ultimately, they decided to go for a combination of both, so the library/media center now has an entire new look.
“It was really cute,” Baugh said. “One student came up to me after it was done and said, ‘Mr. Baugh, Mr. Baugh, it looks like a real library.’ It’s always great to hear things like that from the students.”
School officials are also planning to construct an outdoor science lab, complete with an area to hold classes outside.
“One of the next things we are working on is turning this outdoor area into a science lab and courtyard,” Baugh said. “This is sort of in progress. It will be a place where the community can come. We are also planning a paved walking trail and gazebos.
“With our growth, we just have to grow with the community. With Plainfield and Avon growing so much, a lot of that is going to have to come west into our community. We are ready for that and want our facilities to reflect that.”
