A multi-car accident, possibly involving 40 to 50 cars, has occurred along I-70 near State Road 267 in Hendricks County.
All lanes of I-70 are closed in both directions and authorities are reporting several injuries.
Police say I-70 eastbound and westbound, from State Road 267 (the Plainfield exit) to Exit 59 (the Monrovia exit) is closed.
Numerous vehicles are stranded along the road, although not involved in the wreckage, including a chartered bus with Plainfield High School juniors and seniors who visited Indiana State University today. Authorities are saying that some motorists may be stranded there for hours.
Indiana State Police are working the accident, with assistance from the Hendricks County Sheriff’s Department, Plainfield Police Department, and several other agencies.
Authorities ask that motorists avoid the area entirely to keep from getting caught up in the traffic back-up or in the way of emergency responders.
Heavy snow continues to fall on the area, impairing visibility and making roadways slick.
